Georgia’s Art School – Child Art Classes
The art school has been a dream of mine for some time and finally came to fruition in September 2010 when I moved to 5649 Blenheim St. In having the extra space in the lower level, I opened the doors to what is now my 4th Georgia’s Art School. In over a year, my registration grew from 7 students to 25 and continues to grow to this day.
While living in Ontario and now BC, I’ve taught children’s programs in community centres, recreational centres, after school programs run by associations, private schools and public schools. I’ve been instrumental in starting art programs where there has never been one before including an outreach program to bring art back into the schools. Three years ago I designed a program called No More Scribbling. It successfully addresses the needs of struggling 5+ year old who lack focus, have an improper pencil grip and fidget or have a diagnosis of ADHD or DCC including other neurodivergent conditions. I am always on the lookout for new ways to teach and for exciting new challenges I know children will love to draw or paint.
My teaching method is successful in its simplicity as it is child led. It doesn’t matter what the child chooses I can always instill the of basics of design, use of shapes, colour theory and composition. Sometimes though I may have specific projects I want them to tackle as I may feel it is time they need to be challenged in another direction. I always make sure each child feels they have accomplished something and should be proud of it. So often I think a child’s lack of self-esteem is a lack of accomplishment and possibly a lack of some well-placed praise.
Besides all the basics i.e. colour theory, composition
and art history your child will learn:
- How to hold a pencil properly
- How to sit properly – good posture is the key to a relaxed arm and hand
- How to focus
- How to learn through patience
- How to draw by breaking the picture into small pieces
- How to rise to the challenges
- There are unlimited possibilities
- To be proud of their achievements
- Challenges make us stronger
- Imagination needs to be developed
- Creativity is something that needs to be nurtured
- Anything is possible
I want each child to experience
the JOY of:
- Starting something new
- Growing with the effort
- Finishing what they started
For those children passionate about art I have 2 options for after school classes during the week days
(Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday)
You can register your child as a PRIVATE STUDENT, meaning I see them one on one.
or
You can register your child as a SEMI-PRIVATE STUDENT that means the class will have 2 – 3 students.
I make all attempt to find age-appropriate students to join each other but some times that becomes too difficult so it becomes a decision to have your child come they may have to come as a private and pay a private fee.
Sometimes if sibling are close in age they can come together as semi-private students.
or
Sometimes the parents can arrange for friends to come together so they register as semi-private students
